What are the best beaches in Oman?
Fins Beach near Sur is arguably the most beautiful for scenery and snorkelling. Ras Al Jinz is unmissable for turtle watching. Fazayah Beach near Salalah rivals the Caribbean for turquoise water. Near Muscat, Bandar Jissah and Qantab offer easy access with excellent swimming.
Oman’s coastline: 3,165 km of contrast
Oman’s beaches defy easy categorisation. In the north, the Gulf of Oman delivers sheltered, calm waters with limestone mountains tumbling into the sea. Around Sur and the eastern coast, remote coves shelter nesting sea turtles. In Musandam, dramatic fjord-like inlets replace beaches with cliffs dropping vertically into the Arabian Gulf. And in Dhofar, 1,200 km south, the Indian Ocean washes over white sand fringed by coconut palms — an entirely different world from the capital.
No single list can do justice to all of it, but these ten beaches represent the full spectrum of what Oman offers along its extraordinary coast.
1. Fins Beach (Shab Beach), near Sur
Fins Beach sits at the point where Wadi Tiwi meets the sea, and the confluence of amber mountains, white sand, and improbably clear water creates one of the most beautiful coastal landscapes in Oman. The snorkelling directly off the beach is outstanding — the rocky headlands shelter coral gardens with healthy fish populations.
The beach is a 2-hour drive from Muscat via the coastal road, and combines perfectly with Wadi Shab and Wadi Tiwi. Book the Wadi Tiwi and Fins Beach full-day tour if you don’t want to self-drive the 2-hour stretch.
2. Fazayah Beach, west Salalah
Fazayah is the most remote and arguably the most spectacular beach in Oman. Located 80 km west of Salalah near the Yemeni border, it requires a long drive on a good tarmac road through arid mountains before arriving at a beach of bone-white sand curving into water so turquoise it looks digitally enhanced. There are no facilities, no crowds, and no development.
The West Salalah tour is the easiest way to reach it — see our Salalah complete guide for details.
3. Ras Al Jinz (Turtle Beach)
Ras Al Jinz is the easternmost point of the Arabian Peninsula and home to one of the largest nesting sites for green sea turtles in the world. Night tours — managed strictly by the reserve to protect the animals — take small groups onto the beach to watch turtles hauling themselves up the sand and laying eggs (or, in season, hatchlings racing for the sea).
The experience is unlike anything else in Oman. The Ras Al Jinz turtle adventure tour from Muscat covers the 2-day trip including accommodation near the reserve.
4. Daymaniyat Islands
Technically a nature reserve archipelago rather than a single beach, the Daymaniyat Islands 18 km off the Batinah coast are Oman’s premier marine destination. Coral reefs in exceptional condition surround nine uninhabited islands, sheltering hawksbill turtles, reef sharks, rays, and hundreds of species of tropical fish.
Access is by boat from Al Sawadi or Muscat. The Daymaniyat Islands snorkelling trip with lunch is the most popular organised option from Muscat.
5. Al Mughsail Beach, near Salalah
Al Mughsail is the signature beach of the Dhofar region — a long arc of pale gold sand backed by rugged limestone headlands riddled with blowholes that shoot seawater 30 metres into the air when seas are rough. Swimming is excellent in the calmer months (October–May), and the khareef season turns the surrounding hills a vivid green.
The beach is 40 km west of Salalah and is included in most organised West Salalah tours.
6. Bandar Jissah, Muscat
The closest beach of real quality to central Muscat, Bandar Jissah is a sheltered bay tucked below golden cliffs with calm, clear water. The Shangri-La resort occupies the western end, but the public beach is accessible and free. Snorkelling around the rocky headlands reveals decent coral and fish populations.
7. Qantab Beach, Muscat
A small fishing village beach south of Muscat, Qantab sees few tourists despite its beauty. The colourful fishing boats anchored in the bay add character, and the water is calm and swimmable year-round. Scuba diving trips to nearby reefs depart from here.
8. Yiti Beach, Muscat
A 30-minute drive from central Muscat takes you to Yiti, a long undeveloped beach at the foot of rocky mountains. Popular with Muscat residents for weekend barbecues, it sees surprisingly few tourists. The northern end, away from the main car park, offers more seclusion.
9. Mirbat Beach, east Salalah
The ancient port town of Mirbat sits 70 km east of Salalah, and its beach occupies a perfect crescent bay overlooked by a 16th-century fort. The beach itself is clean and rarely crowded. The town’s history as a frankincense trading hub gives it a cultural depth unusual for a beach destination.
The East Salalah highlights tour passes through Mirbat as part of a circuit covering Wadi Darbat and the baobab trees.
10. Six Senses Zighy Bay, Musandam
Accessible only by boat, overland 4WD, or paraglider (the resort offers all three), Zighy Bay is the most exclusive beach in Oman. Framed by the dramatic fjord mountains of Musandam, its turquoise water is calm even in rough weather thanks to its sheltered position. Non-guests can access the beach via the restaurant.
See our full guide to Six Senses Zighy Bay for access details.
How we chose this list
We evaluated each beach on water quality and clarity, scenery and surroundings, swimming and snorkelling potential, accessibility, and what makes it distinctive relative to other beaches in the country. Overcrowded or over-developed beaches were given lower rankings even when they offer good facilities.
